Default vesting of account

i have been working at my current employer since i was 16 (almost 17), but i didn't start contributing to the 403(b) until i was almost 19. the end of this month, it'll be five years with them, but not five years contributing. so does the five years for keeping employer match start upon start of contributions or is it just five total years of employment?

short answer: it depends

usually the time period is from the actual hire date and not the first contribution. you may want to check your retirement plan though.
