Default stone vs. metal?

I was just cooking (bad as I am) and my moms boyfriend just came in the room and told me its not a good idea to have a hot pan on the stove with nothing on it because it warps the metal. So I got into a conversation about why (although I already knew the answer from logic its just always the first question I askautomatically ) and he said that stone will not warp like metal and they do make stone cooking pans. So heres my question. What are the pros. and cons of cooking with a metal or stone pan (besides cost). Would it be better to invest in a stone set of cookware (I'll be 18 in a year so I need to start thinking of this stuff and getting it while I still have a full bank account or I can give it as a gift idea). So please if anyone can give me advice it would be helpful. Thank you!
P.S. I have been known to mess with recipes and do some creative cooking but that is not my career choice (which ispsychology )
and yes there is such a thing as stone cookware I looked it up......
There is no such thing as a stone cooking pan of any kind. Stone would crack the first time that you put it on the burner. Perhaps your moms boyfriend was thinking of enameled cookware which in my humble opinion is garbage. Heating a pan prior to putting food in it is the way that you keep food from sticking.

I've never used stone cookware, or heard of it until now. Ceramic, yes, but still not in something that you would put on the top of the stove. I looked it up as well, and I didn't find anything but baking pans, and a pizza stone.
If you're thinking about buying pots and pans now, you should buy something without Teflon, or any other non-stick surface. Too many health warnings about that stuff. If I were you, I'd buy some stainless steel pots and pans with lids. And I'd buy them from a restaurant supply place, because they are cheaper and better made than most stuff you can find in any normal store.
The only substance that is a conductor that has no chance of cracking is metal, with the direct high heat of a burner. As for stoneware, I've found that it's good for baking pizzas, and probably good for baking other items as well because it's not having to withstand the direct heat. I've cracked some clay bowls that I accidentally put on a hot burner before.
So, buy stainless steel pots with a thick bottom from a restaurant supply store.
