So I wasn't sure of a forum to put this since its not savings or investments, so here it is.
How are you conserving/cutting back with gas and energy prices so high? Are you making any changes? Personally, I drive my cars like an old lady, reduced revs = reduced gas. I have also begun a new experiment with car pooling with my old lady since we both work in the same town. Car pooling sucks, but it also saves some monthly fuel expenses. |

my office is buying me a year long bus pass. it starts august 1st and i'm stoked to use it. i spend $45-$60/week on gas. should cut it down dramatically. I plan on selling the nissan when it gets done and getting a civic or a crx. something with stupid good mileage. then when i get done with graduate school i'll make enough to buy a gas guzzling sports car or something else that is turbo'd that gets 25mpg or so.
i try to keep the electricity down. open the windows, bbq when i can. other than that, it's mostly recession stuff. i don't spend a lot on clothes, i shop at costco when i can and don't buy a whole lot of other stuff. it's actually good for me. i don't spend a whole lot more on gas than i did a year ago, but i have just as much and just as much travel, but i save more because i'm very conscious about my spending. |

There is a bus that goes from my town to the town I work in, but its pretty rural in my area and the bus makes a million stops, and I just don't like bus people.

I hate the bus too. but in the morning it's mostly working professionals. it's the one that goes by my house that is ultra grimey.

there's no bus or any public transportation for that matter that would get me to work. and even if there was, it would probably take 3 hours.
i still drive 80+ to get here.... even if it costs me a little bit of fuel economy. I am pretty consciousness at home. I never have a light on in a room i'm not in. |

As far as gas goes I'm screwed. 35 mile one way to work, no busses or anything else. My electric and other utilities are low because I don't spend much time at home.

People are just stupid, lazy, or a combination of the two.
if my power is about to get shut off, i'm getting a 2nd job. there's still plenty of places hiring... dunkin donuts here has a huge sign out, so does mcdonalds and dominos pizza. working a couple days there can easily get you the hundred bucks you need to pay your power bill. if i can't find a snd job, i'm going to rummage through the house and ebay shit i don't need to raise some money. if that doesn't work, its time to sell the car and get a $500 crasher to hold you over. there's ways around it. americans just in general suck and want to be helped. i bet you 80% of these shut offs are happening to people making more than 40k a year. |

i can agree with this. it's the people who are more highly leveraged that are coming up short. those with zero income probably don't have car loans, credit cards, and other high bills. now they have to pay utilities, if you don't see what you are paying for, you probably avoid it.
