Default Why are the majority of female criminals in prison for non-violent crimes?

Rehab doesnt work. Hollywoods proven that already.

Wheres your equality now? I thought feminists want equality? Im sure if men did those... theyd end up in jail aswell.

Its just feminists practicing what they preach nothing wrong with that.

No man or woman is above the law. If you cross the line... you end up where everyone else end up... prison.

This is an old old argument and it breaks down into a number of points quite neatly.

First, why are you focusing solely on the treatment of women in prison. Many men who commit non violent crime are similarly abused sexually by other inmates and prison guards. Why draw the distinction? Such men are also by your own reasoning much more likely to find themselves imprisoned alongside more violent offenders.

Second, while drug possession of itself is generally a victimless crime, the consequences of drug use leave victims everywhere. Yes some women do take the rap to save a male partner a stiffer sentence, which is their choice, and not a very sensible one. It happens the other way round too. How on earth do you get accurate statistics on such things?

Self defense, last time I looked - was not a crime. You are allowed to defend yourself with reasonable force. If someone thumps you, you can thump them back. Shooting them is somewhat excessive. Are women wrongly imprisoned? Sure - so are men. Classifying "self defense" as a non-violent crime makes no sense. Firstly it isn't a crime to begin with. Secondly, I can only assume that you mean a circumstance where a woman reacts violently to a perceived threat in which case - this IS a crime of violence however you try spinning it.

Tax dues are not violent crimes but they do have victims are all the other taxpayers who have to make up the difference AND fork out even more wads of cash to keep people locked up and unable to contribute.

From what I know of the legal system, courts are highly reluctant to lock up primary caregivers (usually women) and will generally go out on a limb to avoid it from happening at all.

The last part of your question deserves the most attention. There should be alternatives to locking people up when they are not a threat to the community. Prisons are extremely expensive to run, and all evidence I have come across suggests that they do very little to prevent people reoffending on release. But they do make jobs harder to find, create more welfare dependencies and have awful effects on the prospects of the children of those incarcerated. There are better alternatives for both men and women who do not represent a threat to the public.

There are huge faults in the way the judicial system acts with regard to poverty/wealth and race which I think provide an extremely valid focus but fall outside the scope of this question.

I do not think the prison system works at all well. It does little to rehabilitate, less to prevent re offending and often subjects prisoners to levels of abuse nobody deserves to suffer. But in this men on the whole come off far worse than women.

To answer the last of your question, which is the title question itself - the majority of women in prison are put there for non-violent crimes because those are the majority of crimes women commit.
