My son is buying a second-hand car from a dealer, we pick it up on friday, the dealer says he will get a mot for it and we have got the insurance sorted, the problem is that it is not taxed, how do we stand with the law as we can't tax the car until we get it, but we need to drive it home<br />

at the dealer you prob get 30 day tags, in pa i know you pay the tax when you register the vehicle, so you prolly got 30days to come up with the money, or work it in with the financing
hey just noticed it looks like we have the same name;))) |

Most dealers will put a minimum of 6 months Road Tax on the car, if not you should ask them to do it for you as they will have the V5 in their files and it should not be a problem for them to do it, as long as you give them your insurance document and they have the MOT Certificate.

One don't buy a car without a current MOT and ROAD TAX - you cannot use it on road without. I cannot understand how you have the insurance sorted out without the previous ownership documentation. If it is not taxed you cannot take it onto the road. SERIOUSLY ..... YOU ARE BUYING A CAR WITHOUT TAX, MOT AND WITHOUT A TEST DRIVE???????????????? WITHOUT THE CAR BEING CHECKED BY PROFESSIONALS FOR DEFECTS!
Sorry for stressing you but recently been through the same intro when my son bought his first motorbike! Goggle, look and see what you need to know. But DON'T buy a car without doing ALL the above! Also, you need to do a check on the car to see if it is stolen, an insurance write off. There are categories A-D and X - A being the worst and the car should be crushed! There are many places on the net that you can check on the status of the car if you have the registration number. You will have to pay around £20 - also take someone from the AA or RAC with you to look around that car, that will cost as well - but infinitely less than if you don't! And don't pay him in CASH either! Check the mileage and use something like 'Gumtree' on the net to view similar car mileages. Question yourself - if the car is dirt cheap, is it a write off, why does it have NO MOT or TAX! Because it will cost you a fortune to have those things done - and remember you cannot drive it or park it on the road without MOT or ROAD TAX! Basically the car should come with road tax and mot if it is roadworthy! Sounds like something to AVOID like the plague! And if it is a category A or B insurance write off then you CANNOT EVER take it onto the road! |

Get your insurance company to fax a cover note to the dealer. They can then tax the car for you. You'd have to pay extra, obviously, but I'm surprised they didn't suggest that, as the last few times I've bought a car, that's been the procedure.

Hi
You can ask the dealer to tax the car for you on his trade policy for the cost of the tax. It shouldn't be a problem. Very best regards Geordie |
