Default How much are you saving for winter fuel/home heating costs?

So how much are you squirreling away each month to cover fuel costs this winter?

we shouldn't spend too much. it is going to be a factor when finding a new apartment. we are going to look for all electric heating and electric appliances. hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to find. electric/heating should run around $100-$150 a month at most. it would be less, but the wife likes to just sit by the heater and read a book when it gets cold. plus she likes to walk around like it's 80 degrees outside. I always have to tell her to put some sweats and socks on.

i think your estimate for electric heat is a little low, unless electric is dirt cheap out there

B, you ever think about a wood stove? and don't you have fireplaces?
I think wood is around 100 a chord, maybe 150 /chord chopped
its a little messy but its good heat

i wonder if furnaces can run on fast food diesel

its about 175-200 for a cord delivered here

pellets are cheaper, more efficient, and is more controlable temp wise. plus, they dont emit creosote, so i won't have to worry about chimney fires.

firewood is a pain in the ass. you have to stack it, store it, dry it, load it in, build the fire, stoke it. give me a dial or a switch and i'm happy. i'll pay $200-$300 more per winter.

I'm trying to save some money and have the tanks full going into winter. I have been kicking around the idea of taking out a personal loan from the credit union for about $2000 for a year also. That way I can break up my heating costs over the course of a year. Basically I don't know what to do. Looking at buying a gas furnace, but I have to research what it takes to get a gas line installed from the street into the house. Some people are telling me that if there is a gas line on the street that the gas company will install the hook-up for free. Also I use a kersoseen(sp) heater in the winter. I keeps the living area warm while we're home.

be careful of those kersoseen heaters
make sure they don't burn all the oxygen out of the room

easiest way to get info from the gas company is to call them directly, but then you're looking at a new boiler

lol

this years costs will be 200% more than last years.

i paid 2.59 a gallon last season.
this season, its 4.89.

doubled.

i paid about 2500 ish in fuel oil last year.
this year will end up being 5k or more if its colder.

i'm better off taking that 2500 and putting it into the stove, which i can use forever (at least a while) and then only 400-500 or so on a tonne of pellets.
low burns about 1 lb per hour, so i'm looking at 2000 lbs in a ton, so 2000 hours of heat off 500 bucks.
that's 83 full days of 24 hr running.

500 bucks for 3 months of oil? not a chance.
even at last years prices, i was spending 400 a MONTH.
this year will be 600-800 a MONTH.

pellet FTW.

i don't think a pellet stove is going to heat your house brian

you ever think about one of the outdoors wood stoves?
no mess inside, you fill it once a day, no fire risk
